Summer is the Season for Small Moves!
Summer is the Season for Small Moves!
Everyday I hear at least one of our customers say, "Gosh I hate moving!" Usually that is why there are at our office, but when that's not the reason it's a great opportunity for me to sell them on our moving services. Moving is stressful. Moving is hard work. But, at one point or another we all have to do it. Here are five great tips that will make your summer move easier.
1. Don't Cut Corners!
Many people try to cut corners on their move. They lift items that are too heavy, without the proper equipment or help and they end up getting injured or damaging their furniture. Some people try to save a few dollars and use inadequate packing materials, or worse yet, no packing materials at all. There are a million ways to cut corners, but doing so will only make your move even more stressful. Use the correct materials, hire help or rent equipment if it's needed and stay organized so cutting corners is not necessary.
2. Buy Extra Materials In Advance.
Make lists of materials you need and buy them ahead of time. Always buy from stores who will let you return unused supplies. This way you can make sure you have enough of everything on moving day and it won't cost you any extra. You will waste time and money if you run out of items the day of the move and running all over town at the last minute is a sure way to significantly increase your stress level.
3. Stay Organized.
Make a plan and then stick to it. Buying everything in advance is only one way to ensure organization. Plan which room you will start with and which you will finish with. We always start with the furthest room and move towards the front door. This way we get the hard work done when we have the most energy. The only caveat to this plan is if there are large items in the way. Then we will always load those first.
4. Don't Forget the Little Things.
I have two things to say about the little things. First, when you are packing there always seem to be strange odds and ends left over after everything is packed. These are the items you never know what to do with. A good way to avoid this is while you are packing never set anything aside for later. When you pick up an item to pack, deal with it then and there. If you don't know if you want it, throw it away or donate it because it will only cause problems later.
Also, don't forget the little things that will make the day more enjoyable. We have a tradition in our household that we always do a pre, mid and post 7-11 run on the move day to make sure we always have plenty of cold drinks and snacks to get us through the day.
5. If Possible, Hire Professionals.
There are movers that work within any budget. Let the pros do what they are good at.
