Santa Barbara Crating
Packing , Crating, and Shipping High Value Art, Furniture, or Equipment
When you are shipping important, fragile, or valuable items, sometimes a cardboard shipping box is not sufficient to ensure adequate protection from transportation handling. Double-boxing, double-walled boxes and edge protectors can add some protection but still allow for the possibility of crushing or punctures. When heavy items are stacked on top of the box, or the box itself is dropped or bumped, the contents can be damaged. For items worth thousands of dollars or more, the safety offered by a wooden crate is required. Crating your art, furniture, or equipment is the best option when you need superior protection.
Santa Barbara Pack and Post can provide a custom wooden crate that will protect your most important shipment.
Crating Artwork
Some of the items that we can crate include paintings, sculptures, stained glass, and other media. Pack and Post just completed a large stained glass shipment, fully crated, that arrived in perfect condition! Fine art shipping is one of our specialties!
Crating Household Items
Furniture can be extremely fragile, especially if it is old or ornate. Crating furniture is highly recommended for antiques or other important pieces. We can also crate mirrors, china, glassware, vases, screens, chandeliers, lights, lamps, musical instruments (guitars, harps, etc.) and sporting goods.
Crating Equipment
We can crate medical equipment, heavy equipment, machines, electronics, X-rays, lasers, microscopes, testing equipment, and many other equipment types.
What to Consider When Crating for Shipment
When crating your fragile item, we consider the following:
Best inside dimensions based on the packaging strategy
Internal bracing
Opening side(s)
Plywood grade, thickness, and strength
Fastener type (screws, staples, corrosion resistance)
Weight of the item and strength of the crate
Cost of the crate
Outside crate dimensions (can affect shipping cost)
Inside or outside framing
Sensitivity to vibration and need for pallet cushions (skid mates)
International shipping (import/export) requirements for heat treated wood with ISPM-15 stamp
Potential reuse
Transport method (Freight, UPS/FedEx, Economy or Priority,Air/Ground, etc.)
